What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractor Chiropractic Mission ChiroChiropractic is a health care profession that supports the integrated relationship between the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system. It is a drug-free, non-invasive, hands-on approach to health care. Many people assume that the only time to see a Chiropractor is for a sore neck or back. While those are appropriate times for treatment, a Chiropractor also helps to maintain optimal health and prevent injury. Chiropractic is a safe, gentle, and effective option for the entire family.

How Do Chiropractic Adjustments Work?

A chiropractic adjustment is used when a joint is not moving to its full capacity due to tight muscles, inflammation, or misalignment. During an adjustment the Chiropractor applies a quick but gentle force through the joint with their hands allowing the affected area to move with greater freedom, reducing pain and restoring movement.

However, chiropractic adjustments don’t just treat your symptom; they restore the nervous system allowing the body’s natural healing potential to operate at its best. Think of your brain as a computer and your nerves as a communication system connecting that computer to the rest of your body. This central nervous system controls and coordinates all systems in the body: musculoskeletal, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, immune, hormonal, and reproductive. Therefore, when a nerve is irritated any aspect of health may suffer depending on the function of that impaired nerve.

Nerve interference can happen anywhere there is compression on a nerve. This compression can slow down, speed up or distort messages from the brain resulting in a communication breakdown.  When that nerve supply is disturbed it eventually leads to a symptom. For example nerves in your low back send messages to control digestion, reproductive organs, lower back and leg muscles and joints. Depending on what nerve is compressed it can cause an array of symptoms from impaired digestive function to numbness and tingling down the leg. Often, by the time pain and symptoms appear the misalignment could have been present for years. Not only can misalignments cause nerve compression, they can lead to degeneration due to greater stress on the joint. A Chiropractor locates and corrects spinal interference so that your nervous system can perform at its own optimized level.

Regular chiropractic adjustments are a proactive choice to maintain optimal health and pain-free function of the body.

What To Expect

Mission ChiropractorDr. Lee Phillips has a unique approach to chiropractic care. He not only utilizes chiropractic adjustments, he also addresses the soft tissues using Active Release Techniques (ART®). Dr. Lee Phillips is the only full body certified provider of Active Release Techniques (ART®) in Mission, BC. His physical examination may include a postural evaluation, orthopedic testing, gait analysis, and/or muscle testing. He will evaluate your symptom pattern in order to find the potential cause of your condition. His treatment approach is diverse and includes joint manipulation and mobilization in conjunction with soft tissue therapies. To avoid future injuries Dr. Lee Phillips can prescribe specific exercises, give postural recommendations, and explain the mechanism of injury so that it may be avoided in the future.

If this is your first treatment you will be asked to complete a confidential intake form; initial visits typically last 30 – 45 minutes. Each subsequent treatment session is approximately 10-15 minutes. Patients should wear clothing that allows access to the problem area such as running shorts for a hamstring injury or a tank top for a shoulder injury. Evoke has gowns and shorts available for you to change into if necessary.

Depending on your specific condition, your age, your overall health, and whether your condition is acute or chronic, you may expect different results from chiropractic treatment. After a thorough history and initial exam, Dr. Lee Phillips will recommend an individualized treatment plan. Recent conditions often resolve faster than those that have been long standing or those which are constantly being re-aggravated. In general you can expect a decrease in pain and discomfort and an increase in range of motion and function as a result from chiropractic care.
